First safe move
Start here: Confirm the exact airport, station, terminal, and hotel district.
Transport
In short
Pick the Shanghai airport route after you know the terminal, arrival time, hotel district, luggage load, and payment setup. Metro and rail can be efficient, while taxi or hotel pickup is calmer for late arrivals or heavy bags.

Editorial check
Transport answers were reviewed with the airport, metro, rail, and route source checks.
Shanghai airport, metro, rail, taxi, and hotel guidance for current operating hours, fares, last trains, station exits, and terminal changes. Fares, last trains, station exits, ride-hailing rules, ticketing windows, and operator notices still need current source checks.
Recovery template
Start with the immediate move, keep a human or offline fallback, and only rely on live rules after checking the official operator, provider, or source.

Fallback path
Stay in a staffed area, use the taxi queue or hotel pickup, show the hotel address in Chinese, and avoid uncertain curb pickup if phone or payment is shaky.
Do not assume
Do not treat this answer as final live proof. Do not use as proof of current fares, last trains, operating hours, station exits, or ticketing rules without official operator checks.

Action path
A practical answer should leave the traveler with a few moves they can actually make before the trip or at the point of friction.
Confirm the exact airport, station, terminal, and hotel district.
Choose the route that is easiest to read while tired.
Verify official schedules, fares, and ticketing rules before travel day.

Three priced ways in from the airport, and the city publishes all three
The ordinary metro is distance-priced from 3 yuan for up to 6 km, then 1 yuan more per 10 km. The Airport Link Line is a separate structure starting at 4 yuan with the full journey at 26 yuan. So the choice between them is a published trade-off, not a guess.
Where in the source: Shanghai portal: “3 yuan … for trips of up to 6 km, with an additional 1 yuan for every 10 km thereafter”; “the Airport Link Line … fares starting at 4 yuan and the full journey costing 26 yuan”.
The maglev-plus-metro pass bundles a whole day of metro with the maglev ride
The Maglev and Metro Pass is 55 yuan single or 85 yuan return and includes a one-day metro pass alongside the maglev ride. Read it against the plain maglev ticket price on the city's transport overview page, carried below: on an arrival day that keeps moving afterwards, the bundle is the cheaper of the two.
Where in the source: Shanghai portal, Maglev and Metro Pass: “The single-trip version costs 55 yuan, and the round-trip version costs 85 yuan.”
The transport QR code covers the airport line and the maglev, but not the Jinshan Rail Line
The same code works on the metro, buses, the Airport Link Line, the maglev and ferries. The one named exception is the Jinshan Rail Line. Knowing the exception before you are at a gate is the difference between tapping through and queuing at a counter.
Where in the source: Shanghai portal: “The code can be used on the metro, buses, the Airport Link Line, the Maglev Line, and ferries, but not on the Jinshan Rail Line.”

The plain maglev ticket is 50 yuan one way, 80 yuan return
Against the 55-yuan bundle above, a day of metro costs 5 yuan more than the maglev ride alone. This page also confirms the same downtown metro ladder — 3 yuan up to 6 km, then 1 yuan per 10 km — from a second official surface, which is why the fare above is not resting on a single page.
Where in the source: Shanghai transport overview: “A single-journey ticket costs 50 yuan, and a round-trip ticket costs 80 yuan.”

A Shanghai taxi starts at ¥14 for the first 3 km, then ¥2.7 per km — different digits from Beijing
The flag-down covers the first 3 km, so it is not a flat fee. Larger Touran-type cabs and Roewe Ei5 EVs start at ¥16 for the same first 3 km, which is a regulated car-type difference and not overcharging. Beijing's equivalents are ¥13 and ¥2.3, which is exactly why a fare you remember from another city is not a check on this one.
Where in the source: Shanghai transport commission fare standard: flag-down ¥14 for the first 3 km, then ¥2.7/km; Touran-type and Roewe Ei5 cabs ¥16.

What this source does not settle: The city government's own English transport pages plus the transport commission's taxi standard. No arrival-hall walking route, terminal layout, last-train time or taxi queue position is published here, and no ride-hail price — that is set by the platform per city with no published tariff. The metro fare shown is the downtown network; suburban 市域线 lines opened from 2024 run on a separate per-km mechanism carried on this site's Shanghai city-rules page.
