Your ETA is linked to the passport you applied with, and you only need to show that passport when you travel to the UK — so the passport at the border must be the one the ETA was issued against.

If it is refused
A refusal points to a visa; an identity-stage rejection can be reapplied for. Sources read 2026-08-08.
If a person's ETA application is refused, they cannot appeal and instead need to apply for a visa if they still wish to seek permission to come to the UK. There is no ETA re-try around a refusal — the route forward is a visa application.

There is no right to administrative review or appeal against a decision made on an ETA application. The published caseworker guidance states this directly, which is why a refusal points to a visa rather than a challenge.

An application rejected at the identity verification stage will not be assessed against the suitability requirements for an ETA, and the applicant is able to make a new application. So an identity-stage rejection can be reapplied for, unlike a refusal on suitability, which points to a visa.

No. An ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK. It is a digital permission to travel — not a visa or a tax — and it does not permit entry on its own; admission is decided separately when you arrive. Carry the passport the ETA is linked to, because that is the document you present.

You cannot appeal. A rejection at the identity verification stage is different: that is not a suitability refusal, and you are able to make a new application.
