How should tourists pay for metro rides in China?

In short

For the first ride, choose the method that is easiest to recover from: a station ticket machine or service desk, a city transit QR code inside a wallet app, or a local transit card if the city supports it clearly.

Information checked

The current official metro operator guidance for the city, ticket machine language support, wallet transit-code availability, card refunds, and airport-station service hours. Fares, last trains, station exits, ride-hailing rules, ticketing windows, and operator notices still need current source checks.

Recovery template

Use the answer as a recovery path, not just a reading page

Start with the immediate move, keep a human or offline fallback, and only rely on live rules after checking the official operator, provider, or source.

Use first-night planner

First safe move

Start here: Confirm the exact airport, station, terminal, and hotel district.

Fallback path

Stay in a staffed area, use the taxi queue or hotel pickup, show the hotel address in Chinese, and avoid uncertain curb pickup if phone or payment is shaky.

Do not assume

Do not treat this answer as final live proof. Do not use as proof of current fares, last trains, operating hours, station exits, or ticketing rules without official operator checks.

Action path

What to do next

A practical answer should leave the traveler with a few moves they can actually make before the trip or at the point of friction.

1

Confirm the exact airport, station, terminal, and hotel district.

2

Choose the route that is easiest to read while tired.

3

Verify official schedules, fares, and ticketing rules before travel day.

Official source

What an official source actually states

These facts are read straight from the operator's own page, so you can check each one at the source rather than take it on our word.

Know what the ride costs before you worry about how to pay for it

Beijing's own page prices the ordinary network by distance: CNY 3 within six kilometers, then CNY 4, CNY 5 and CNY 6 by band, and CNY 1 more for every additional 20 kilometers with no cap. A fare you can predict is what makes a failed scan a minor problem rather than a stuck-at-the-gate one.

Where in the source: Beijing portal: “the starting price is CNY 3 for journeys within six kilometers … There is no maximum fare cap.”

The airport line is priced separately at a flat CNY 25

The Capital Airport Express sits outside the distance ladder at a fixed fare set by the city's development-and-reform commission. So the arrival-day leg and the everyday legs are two different pricing systems, and confusing them is why airport fares look wrong against a metro fare chart.

Where in the source: Beijing portal: “The Capital Airport Express … with a fixed fare of CNY 25.”

If the QR fails at a major hub, a card or cash lane is mandatory — 必须

Clause 二(四) makes it mandatory for scale-above key venues, transit hubs named among them, to accept mobile payment, bank card and cash, and to guarantee your right to choose. A large interchange station is such a hub, so a failed scan there entitles you to another lane rather than leaving you stranded. A small suburban station is not the same case.

Where in the source: 二(四): scale-above key venues including transit hubs 必须 accept mobile payment, bank card and cash.

What this source does not settle: Beijing's fare page plus the national payment-convenience policy. Fares here are Beijing's only — every Chinese city sets its own metro tariff, and Shanghai's is carried separately on this site. Nothing here says which app to install, whether a given transport QR works in a given city, or where the ticket machines are; the ticketing ladder for Beijing gates is on this site's metro QR page against its own source.
