Checking out in China: your stored bag and what you left behind

I left something in the room. What is the hotel obliged to do?

A hotel in China has published duties over your property. It must provide safe-deposit boxes, cabinets or a storage room and a safe, name a person responsible, and keep a register of what it takes in and hands back. Anything you leave in the room must be kept and returned or advertised; unclaimed after three months, it goes to the local police as lost property.

Six moves at checkout

  1. 1.Before you hand back the key, walk the room once: bedside drawer, safe, bathroom shelf, the socket behind the bed.
  2. 2.If you are leaving a bag at the desk, ask for the deposit to be entered in the register. The property owes you a record of taking it in and handing it back.
  3. 3.Save your accommodation registration record before you leave the city. Registration Record Inquiry on the immigration platform returns the completed record, and a municipal form can be reprinted through the channel that issued it.
  4. 4.If you discover something missing after you leave, phone the property the same day. It must keep left property, try to return it to the owner, or post a notice inviting claims.
  5. 5.If more than three months have passed, ask which public security organ received it. Unclaimed items are listed and handed over to be treated as lost property.
  6. 6.If your next bed is not a hotel, remember that a new 24-hour registration clock starts the moment you arrive there.

What is the hotel deposit for, how is it taken, and when does it come back?

Not published on any official or operator page we opened.

The deposit is the single most-asked question about checking out of a Chinese hotel, and we found no authority for any answer to it. Rather than repeat a figure from a travel blog, here is exactly what was searched:

  • Measures for the Administration of Public Security in the Hotel Industry, read end to end. It regulates registration, storage of guests' property, left-behind property and safety. It says nothing about deposits.
  • Shanghai's Provisions on Accommodation Registration by Hospitality Establishments, read end to end including the document catalogue. No deposit.
  • The Beijing and Shanghai municipal English portals' accommodation and arrival pages. No deposit.
  • A web search for an official figure, which returned travel blogs and operator marketing only.

If a property quotes you a deposit, ask for it in writing on the folio and keep the receipt until the refund lands. That is a practical habit, not a published rule, and this page will not pretend otherwise.

I left my charger in the room and I am already on the train. What happens to it?

The hotel-industry measures say property left behind by a guest shall be properly kept, and the hotel shall try to return it to the owner or post a notice inviting claims. Phone the property the same day with your room number and the dates. Nothing published sets a fee or a forwarding method, so agree that part directly with the desk.

How long does a hotel keep something I left behind?

Three months of notice. After that, unclaimed property is listed and sent to the local public security organ to be handled as lost property. If you are past that point, ask the hotel which station received the item rather than asking the hotel for the item.

Is the hotel obliged to store my bag after checkout?

They do not set a storage period, a fee, or a right to leave a bag after your stay ends. Ask, and get the deposit entered in the register.

How much is the deposit and when do I get it back?

We could not confirm either figure. No official or operator page we opened publishes a deposit amount, a hold method or a release timeline — not the hotel-industry public security measures, not Shanghai's accommodation-registration provisions, and not the Beijing or Shanghai municipal English portals. Numbers you see elsewhere are somebody's experience rather than a published rule.

I lost my accommodation registration form. Can I get another one?

Yes. Shanghai's procedures say a lost Registration Form for the Accommodation of Overseas Personnel may be reissued or reprinted through the original application channel. If you filed through the immigration administration's platform, Registration Record Inquiry under the Foreigner Service module returns the completed record.

I have checked out and I am moving into an apartment tonight. Anything to do?

Yes, and today. Once the bed is not a hotel, you or the person accommodating you must register with the public security organ for that place within 24 hours of arriving. Checking out of the hotel does not carry the registration with you.
