Why start here

Xiamen is a coastal gem that blends European colonial charm with vibrant Amoy culture. Gulangyu Island is a UNESCO World Heritage car-free paradise, and the city offers a perfect mix of beach life, ancient temples, and some of the best street food in Fujian. It's compact, walkable, and one of China's most livable cities.

First-day shape

Start at Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street for morning coffee and dim sum, then take the 20-min ferry to Gulangyu Island. Walk the car-free lanes to Sunlight Rock for panoramic views, visit the Piano Museum and Shuzhuang Garden seaside garden. Return in the afternoon and climb Nanputuo Temple hill for city views, then eat at Xiahe food stall street.

What makes it tricky

Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport is 8km from downtown with a efficient airport bus (¥10–15) and Metro Line 2. High-speed rail connects from Fuzhou (1h) and Quanzhou (40min). Ferry to Gulangyu departs from Dongdu Pier — arrive early on weekends as queues can be long.

Attraction signals

- Gulangyu Island (鼓浪屿) - Sunlight Rock (日光岩) - Nanputuo Temple (南普陀寺) - Xiamen University (厦门大学) - Hulishan Fortress (胡里山炮台)

Transport note

Xiamen is very walkable in the old town. The Metro covers most attractions (Lines 1 & 2). Gulangyu ferries run every 20 min from Dongdu Pier (¥35 tourist ticket includes return). Taxis are cheap (starts at ¥10). Bike-sharing is widely available.

Food note

Xiamen is the birthplace of several iconic dishes: oyster omelette (海蛎煎),沙茶面 (satay noodle soup), bobo chicken (土笋冻), and peanut soup. Head to Xiahe Road or Shen Shu Lane for the best local food at rock-bottom prices. Gulangyu has excellent traditional pastry shops.

  • Open official tourism and transport sources before booking timed plans.
