Why start here

Wenzhou is a coastal city in southern Zhejiang known for its entrepreneurial culture, distinctive dialect, and dramatic mountain-ringed landscape. It's one of China's oldest port cities and remains an important commercial center.

First-day shape

Morning: take a ferry across the Ou River to see the old port area and the historic streets of the Wenzhou Old City. Visit the Jiangmen Ancient Street (江心屿古街). Lunch at a seafood restaurant near the port. Afternoon: visit the Nanxi Scenic Area (楠溪江) — a 40-minute drive inland — for karst mountains, bamboo forests, and traditional water towns. Evening: try Wenzhou's famous 瓯柑 (Ougan citrus) and fish head tofu soup.

What makes it tricky

Wenzhou has excellent high-speed rail connections (to Hangzhou 2h, to Shanghai 3h). Wenzhou Longwan Airport handles domestic flights. Local transport is mainly buses and taxis; the city is hilly so walking can be demanding. Summer typhoons are a consideration.

Transport note

Wenzhou has good high-speed rail links and an airport with domestic routes. The Nanxi Scenic Area is best visited by rental car or organized tour. Within the city, taxis are cheap and buses cover most areas. Summer can be hot and humid. Mountain hiking routes require reasonable fitness.

Food note

Wenzhou cuisine is distinct within Zhejiang, with more focus on seafood and lesser-known ingredients. Signature dishes include: fish head tofu soup (鱼头豆腐汤), steamed fish with ginger and soy, Wenzhou-style oysters (温州蚶), and the local Ougan citrus. Seafood markets near the port offer excellent fresh options.
