Qinhuangdao

Qinhuangdao sits where the Great Wall meets the Bohai Sea — a rare convergence of imperial history and coastal scenery. It offers three distinct zones in one prefecture: the beach resort of Beidaihe, the historic fortress town of Shanhaiguan, and the working port city of Haigang. Fast trains from Beijing (2 hours, ¥93) make it an easy escape without the crowds of more famous destinations.

medium priority

Shanhaiguan — First Pass under Heaven

天下第一关

The eastern terminus of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, where the wall meets the narrow corridor between the Yanshan Mountains and the Bohai Sea. The restored east gate tower and surrounding city walls form a square fortification with a 4 km perimeter, walls 14 m high and 7 m thick, surrounded by a moat. The Great Wall Museum nearby is included with some ticket packages.

medium priority

Old Dragon Head

老龙头

The point where the Great Wall extends into the Bohai Sea, located in the Shanhaiguan district. The original wall is long gone, but an extensively rebuilt section with several restored halls marks the dramatic land-sea junction. Ticket ¥60; open 05:30–17:30. Bus 25 from the south gate or train station (¥1–3) gets you there.

medium priority

Jiao Shan Great Wall

角山长城

A section of the Great Wall climbing into the hills north of Shanhaiguan. The lower portion was restored in the 1980s; higher up, the wall transitions to raw stone in its original crumbling state. A temple sits further into the hills, reachable on foot or by chairlift. Ticket ¥30. Taxi from Shanhaiguan ~¥10.

medium priority

Beidaihe Beach Resort

北戴河

A seaside resort district with fine sand beaches along the Bohai coast, historically favored by Chinese leaders and now a popular summer destination. The Gold Coast area in nearby Changli County extends 52.1 km of coastline with soft sand, clear water, and tidal flats.

Why start here

Qinhuangdao sits where the Great Wall meets the Bohai Sea — a rare convergence of imperial history and coastal scenery. It offers three distinct zones in one prefecture: the beach resort of Beidaihe, the historic fortress town of Shanhaiguan, and the working port city of Haigang. Fast trains from Beijing (2 hours, ¥93) make it an easy escape without the crowds of more famous destinations.

First-day shape

Arrive by morning D-train from Beijing. Take a taxi to Shanhaiguan (¥10 from station) and spend the morning at the First Pass under Heaven — walk the restored city walls and visit the Great Wall Museum (free with some tickets). After lunch at a local seafood spot in the old town, head south to Old Dragon Head to see the Great Wall plunge into the Bohai Sea. End the day with a seafood buffet dinner at Haitianyise Hotel overlooking the ocean.

What makes it tricky

Low to moderate. Qinhuangdao Beidaihe Airport (BPE) has limited domestic routes; most visitors arrive by D-train from Beijing (2 hrs, ¥93) or Tianjin. A direct bus from Beijing Capital Airport runs for ¥150 (~4 hrs). Once in the city, taxis are cheap and abundant but drivers rarely speak English — carry your destination written in Chinese. Station-area taxis often refuse meters; negotiate the fare upfront.

Transport note

D-trains from Beijing take 2 hours (¥93); slower T/K trains take 4–6 hours. From Tianjin, similar 2-hour D-train options. Qinhuangdao Beidaihe Airport (BPE) has limited domestic routes to Qingdao, Shijiazhuang, and Shanghai. Within the city, taxis are cheap (¥5–10 for most trips) but drivers don't speak English — carry destinations in Chinese. City buses cost ¥1–2 but are crowded; watch for pickpockets. The city sprawls linearly along the coast from Shanhaiguan to Beidaihe, so taxis are the practical choice for moving between districts.

Food note

Seafood is the dominant cuisine — the Bohai coast supplies fresh hairtail, crab, clams, and shrimp. The Haitianyise Hotel seafood buffet (overlooking the ocean, all-inclusive drinks) is a local institution. The old town around Shanhaiguan has affordable local restaurants. For Western food, Pu Shi (樸石西餐厅) in Taiyangcheng is the go-to for Chicago-style pizza. Vietnam Youyou Cafe offers Vietnamese fare with live music and an English-speaking owner — a rare find in the city.
