City preview

Dalian

Dalian is one of China's most scenic coastal cities — a former Russian and Japanese colonial settlement with a European-feeling waterfront, clean streets, and a bay that rivals Hong Kong or Qingdao. It's been voted China's most livable city multiple times and is a major cruise ship port for northern China.

Why start here

Dalian is one of China's most scenic coastal cities — a former Russian and Japanese colonial settlement with a European-feeling waterfront, clean streets, and a bay that rivals Hong Kong or Qingdao. It's been voted China's most livable city multiple times and is a major cruise ship port for northern China.

First-day shape

Start at Xinghai Square — the largest city square in Asia — with the adjacent Xinghai Bay Bridge and coastal park. Walk south along Binhai Road to Tiger Beach (Yinshatan). In the afternoon visit Zhongshan Square and the Russian-style buildings of Zhongshan Road, then eat at Qingni waqiao food market. Evening stroll along the strip of Dalian's famous wooden coaster cars.

What makes it tricky

Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport is 12km from downtown with a direct Metro Line 2 (¥5). Dalian Railway Station and Dalian North are on the Shenyang–Dalian high-speed line (2h from Shenyang). The tram and bus network is extensive. Ferry services connect to Yantai and Weihai across the Bohai Strait.

Attraction signals

- Xinghai Square and Xinghai Bay (星海广场) - Binhai Road and Tiger Beach (滨海路·金石滩) - Zhongshan Square and Historic Zhongshan Road (中山广场) - Dalian Railway Station Building (大连站) - Diamond Beach (金石滩)

Transport note

Dalian Metro Lines 1, 2, and 12 cover the main areas. Buses and trams fill gaps. Taxis start at ¥10. The city is compact enough to walk in the old town area. Hiring a bike for the Binhai Road coastal section is highly recommended. Dalian has ferry connections to Yantai and Weihai for crossing the Bohai Strait.

Food note

Dalian is famous for seafood — sea cucumber, abalone, crab, and scallops are local specialties. The Dalian-style hot pot is distinctive. The Russian and Japanese colonial history means there are good Western-style cafes along Zhongshan Road. Try 'luliang fish' (鲁鱼) grilled with salt and pepper at the Xinghai night market.
