Route planning

How should foreign tourists handle Tiananmen Square reservations?

In short

Treat Tiananmen Square as a real-name reservation and security-check problem before the Beijing day is built. Check the current official reservation path, passport support, WeChat or phone-number requirements, and whether a related official reservation can cover the same time window.

Information checked

Current Beijing official reservation guidance, Tiananmen Square reservation system, WeChat mini-program behavior, passport support, phone-number verification, related venue reservation rules, security checks, and time-slot availability. Tickets, weather, transport timing, hotel areas, attraction access, and local operator rules still need current checks before booking.

Recovery template

Use the answer as a recovery path, not just a reading page

Start with the immediate move, keep a human or offline fallback, and only rely on live rules after checking the official operator, provider, or source.

Check route pace

First safe move

Start here: Check the current official reservation instructions before committing the Beijing morning.

Fallback path

Remove one transfer, protect the arrival night, and keep one stable first base if the route depends on too many live systems working immediately.

Do not assume

Do not treat this answer as final live proof. Do not use as a fixed itinerary without checking season, weather, ticketing, transport, hotel area, traveler pace, and live attraction rules.

Source boundary

Current Beijing official reservation guidance, Tiananmen Square reservation system, WeChat mini-program behavior, passport support, phone-number verification, related venue reservation rules, security checks, and time-slot availability.

Action path

What to do next

A practical answer should leave the traveler with a few moves they can actually make before the trip or at the point of friction.

1

Check the current official reservation instructions before committing the Beijing morning.

2

Prepare passport details, WeChat or helper-booking path, and the original passport for security checks.

3

Keep a backup Beijing plan if the reservation, phone-number, or time-slot flow does not work.

Official source

What an official source actually states

These facts are read straight from the operator's own page, so you can check each one at the source rather than take it on our word.

Entering Tiananmen Square officially requires an advance real-name reservation

The committee's measure took effect on 15 December 2021 and applies to every visitor, individual and tour group alike: you reserve in advance through the official reservation platform before you can enter. This is the official anchor for treating the Square as a real-name reservation problem, not a walk-up — the page had asserted it with only a generic, unrelated official domain.

Where in the source: Measure, scope and effective-date clause

A foreign passport is an accepted ID for the booking

For an individual booking, foreign visitors reserve with an entry passport or a foreigner's residence permit, entering name, ID-document number and mobile-phone number in the 个人预约 (individual reservation) module.

Where in the source: Individual-reservation clause (个人预约)

The booking runs through named apps and mini-programs, not phone or email

Reservations go through the “天安门广场预约参观” WeChat mini-program, the 北京通 / 北京日报 / 北京时间 apps, the 京城之约 mini-program, or the committee portal's own reservation column (yuyue.tamgw.beijing.gov.cn). The measure states plainly that phone, letter, fax and email reservations are not supported.

Where in the source: Reservation-channels clause

A booking for an adjacent official venue can cover Square entry

Visitors who have already reserved the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, the National Museum of China, the Palace Museum, Zhongshan Park or the Working People's Cultural Palace may enter the Square on that valid record without a separate Square booking — but a Square booking does not substitute for those venues' own bookings.

Where in the source: Adjacent-venue cross-entry clause

The official booking window, slots and gate check are fixed

Individuals may reserve up to 10 days ahead (tour groups at least 12 hours ahead); the day is split into four slots — 升旗 / 上午 / 下午 / 降旗 (flag-raising, morning, afternoon, flag-lowering); one individual order holds up to 7 people, at most 4 of them adults; at the gate you are verified by scanning the QR verification sign or by staff matching your ID.

Where in the source: Booking-window and on-site-verification clauses

Source: Tiananmen Area Management Committee, People's Government of Beijing Municipality (北京市人民政府天安门地区管理委员会), on its own government portal (tamgw.beijing.gov.cn) — 天安门广场预约参观办法(试行)(Tiananmen Square Reservation-Visit Measures, trial) (source measure in effect from 2021-12-15; page dated 2021-11-19; read August 8, 2026)

What this source does not settle: This layer anchors only the official reservation requirement, the accepted-ID set, the booking channels and window, and the adjacent-venue cross-entry rule, read off the committee's own measure. It does not guarantee that any individual reservation clears, does not cover state-event closures beyond the measure's own caveat that major activities can override normal visiting, and does not turn the page's ordered “what to try if the app fails” advice into cited fact — that copy stays operational.
