First-hour money

Changing money when you land, and changing it back before you leave

In short

Where do I change money in China, and what will they ask for?

At the port of entry, where the central bank's guide puts exchange service providers and self-service machines beside the ATMs. Bank of China runs exchange machines at major city airports and exchange points in over 1,700 hotels, and a small cash exchange there needs only valid identification. Keep the slip: to convert more than 500 US dollars equivalent back, you have to produce it.

Back to budget

Applies to

Visitors arriving in mainland China with foreign cash, and anyone at the end of a trip holding renminbi they do not want to take home.

Check before you rely on it

These mechanics are published by one bank. We could not open comparable English pages from ICBC, ABC, CCB or BOCOM, so the 500 US dollar reconversion rule is confirmed for Bank of China rather than for the whole system.

The part nobody tells you is at the end, not the beginning. The receipt from the first counter is what makes the last counter easy.

The bit that catches people

Keep the slip, or cap the change-back at 500 dollars

This is the one rule on the page that costs money if you get it wrong.

Bank of China states that where the renminbi came from foreign currency you brought into China and converted, a foreign customer can reconvert up to the equivalent of 500 US dollars in a day on a valid ID alone. Above that, you also have to provide the original conversion receipt, and it counts as valid while the original settlement date is within 24 months. So the small paper slip handed over at the arrivals counter is the document that makes the departure counter simple.

Arrival to departure

Seven steps, both ends of the trip

  1. 1.Land with your passport reachable. Every exchange route published by the bank and the central bank is keyed to valid identification, and for a visitor that means the passport, not a copy.
  2. 2.Change a small amount in the arrivals hall. The central bank's guide puts exchange service providers and self-service exchange machines at the port of entry; Bank of China says it has installed self-service currency exchange machines at major city airports.
  3. 3.Keep the slip you are handed. It is the document that lets you convert what is left back into your own currency later without argument.
  4. 4.For anything larger, use a bank counter. Bank of China processes settlements within the annual facilitation quota through its app, online banking, counters and smart counters, and requires a counter visit with supporting documents above the quota.
  5. 5.Downtown, look for the exchange sign. The central bank guide states that authorised currency exchanges, some hotels, bank branches and exchange kiosks all provide the service, usually under an eye-catching exchange sign (货币兑换).
  6. 6.Before you fly home, convert what is left. The guide states that remaining RMB cash can be converted back downtown or at the port of exit through currency exchange service providers.
  7. 7.At that last counter, hand over the passport and the original slip. Bank of China lets a foreign customer reconvert up to 500 US dollars equivalent a day on identification alone; above that the original settlement receipt is required, and it is valid while the original settlement date is within 24 months.

Machines at airports, counters in 1,700 hotels

Bank of China states that it has installed self-service currency exchange machines at major city airports and set up foreign currency exchange points with partner institutions, including over 1,700 hotels nationwide. Small-value cash exchanges at those points need valid identification and do not touch the annual facilitation quota.

Changing renminbi back needs one document more

Where the renminbi came from foreign currency you brought in and converted, Bank of China lets a foreign customer reconvert up to 500 US dollars equivalent in a day with valid identification alone. Above that, the original conversion receipt is required, and it counts as valid while the original settlement date is within 24 months.

Buying foreign currency is a counter errand for visitors

Bank of China states that foreign clients have no annual convenience quota for foreign currency purchase and can only conduct those transactions at branch counters. The 50,000 US dollar annual convenience quota applies to domestic individuals and to foreigners holding a permanent residence permit.

Thirty-nine currencies, but not all of them everywhere

Bank of China offers currency exchange for up to 39 major international currencies, and states that some are available only for specific services such as cash transactions, or only in specific regions.

You can also just open an account

The central bank guide states that a bank account can be opened with a passport or other valid ID at any nearby outlet of ICBC, ABC, Bank of China, CCB or BOCOM, and that the account carries deposit and withdrawal in both renminbi and foreign currency, foreign currency purchase and sale, and currency exchange.

In short

Exchange questions travellers actually ask

The arrival question, the identification question, and the one at the end of the trip.

Where do I change money when I land in China?

At the port of entry. The central bank's visitor guide states that other currencies can be exchanged for RMB there through exchange service providers or self-service exchange machines, and Bank of China says it has installed self-service currency exchange machines at major city airports. Beijing lists currency exchange as a 24-hour service at the counters across from its international arrivals exits.

What do I need to show to change money?

Valid identification, which for a visitor means the passport. Bank of China states that small-value foreign currency cash exchanges at its airport machines and hotel exchange points are handled with valid ID and without using the annual facilitation quota.

Can I change my leftover renminbi back at the end of the trip?

Yes. The central bank guide states that remaining RMB cash can be converted back to your own currency or another major currency downtown or at the port of exit. Bank of China adds the mechanics: a foreign customer can reconvert up to 500 US dollars equivalent a day on identification alone.

Why does the counter want the slip from when I changed money?

Because above 500 US dollars equivalent in a day, Bank of China requires the original conversion receipt for renminbi that came from foreign currency you brought in. The receipt counts as valid while the original settlement date is within 24 months. Keep it with the passport, not in the hotel room.

Is the airport rate worse than the city rate?

No opened official source publishes a rate, a spread or a commission for any of these routes, so we do not repeat the usual claim. What is published is that the routes exist in both places, which means you can change a small amount on arrival and the rest later without being trapped by either.

Can I buy US dollars or euros while I am in China?

Only at a branch counter. Bank of China states that foreign clients have no annual convenience quota for foreign currency purchase and can conduct those transactions only through counters, unlike domestic individuals and permanent residence permit holders, who have a quota equivalent to 50,000 US dollars a year.

Do the hotels really change money?

Bank of China counts over 1,700 hotels nationwide as foreign currency exchange points established with partner institutions, and the central bank guide also names hotels among the providers. It does not follow that your hotel is one, so ask at the desk before you count on it.

Not published

What we could not confirm

Rates and spreads are the whole reason people search this topic, and no official page publishes them.

  • No opened source publishes an exchange rate, a spread or a commission for any route. The airport-versus-downtown rate gap that guides assert has no official page behind it, so this page does not repeat it.
  • No opened source names which airports have the self-service exchange machines. Bank of China says only major city airports.
  • No opened source publishes the list of the 1,700-plus hotels that act as exchange points, so the only way to know is to ask at the desk.
  • No opened source states a minimum or a maximum for a single cash exchange at an airport machine. Bank of China describes them as handling small-value exchanges without defining small.
  • Only Bank of China publishes its exchange mechanics in English at this level of detail. We could not open comparable pages from ICBC, ABC, CCB or BOCOM, so the 500 US dollar reconversion rule is confirmed for one bank, not for all of them.
