Unlike an airport, a land crossing closes — and most of these do
Lo Wu, the crossing most visitors take, runs 6:30 am to midnight. Only Lok Ma Chau as the vehicle control point and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge operate 24 hours. That single difference is what turns a late plan into a stranded evening, and it is published by the immigration department itself rather than inferred from a timetable.

Crossing here is a full immigration entry into the mainland, in both directions
The two sides run separate immigration controls, so this is not an internal transfer. Whatever entry route your passport uses for the mainland — visa, visa-free, or transit — has to be valid at the moment you walk through, and the same applies coming back.

The announcement scopes them explicitly to mainland residents aged 14 or older holding valid Exit-Entry Permits for travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao, and to Hong Kong and Macao residents. A foreign passport holder queues in the ordinary lane. This is the kind of thing that looks like a shortcut on a sign and costs you a re-queue.
