Haixi

Haixi (海西) Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is China's most otherworldly landscape — a vast 325,785 km² territory encompassing the Qaidam Basin, the Tanggula Mountains, and the source of the Yangtze River at Geladandong Peak. This is where China's 'Mars Camp' sits, where the Chaka Salt Lake creates a perfect mirror of the sky, and where the Qinghai-Tibet Railway crosses some of the most extreme terrain on Earth. With a population density of just 1.5 people per km², Haixi offers solitude and scale that few places on the planet can match.

Good for Chaka Salt Lake (Sky Mirror) and surreal Qaidam Basin landscapes, Extreme remoteness — Mars-like terrain and Yardang ghost cities, Qinghai-Tibet Railway transit and Geladandong (Yangtze source)

Attractions

Top attractions

Marketplace attraction names can be duplicated or packaged as tours. Use this as a shortlist lead, then verify tickets, hours, and access rules from official sources.

medium priority

Chaka Salt Lake

茶卡盐湖

A vast salt flat at 3,059 m elevation that becomes a perfect mirror when covered in shallow brine. Known as the 'Mirror of the Sky' (天空之镜), it's one of China's most photogenic natural wonders. A narrow-gauge railway crosses the lake.

medium priority

Qaidam Basin Yardang Landforms

雅丹地貌

Wind-eroded rock formations stretching across hundreds of kilometers of the Qaidam Basin, creating an alien landscape of towers, ridges, and 'ghost cities.' Some formations are used as China's Mars simulation base.

medium priority

Geladandong Peak

各拉丹冬峰

At 6,621 m, this is the source of the Yangtze River — China's longest river begins as glacial meltwater from this peak in the Tanggula Mountains. Accessible only to serious mountaineers and expedition teams.

medium priority

Emerald Lake / Dachaidan Cuihu

大柴旦翡翠湖

A cluster of mineral-rich lakes near Da Qaidam that glow in vivid shades of emerald green and turquoise due to dissolved minerals. The surrounding barren desert amplifies the surreal color contrast.

medium priority

Tanggula Mountains and Qinghai-Tibet Railway

The Qinghai-Tibet Railway crosses the Tanggula Pass at 5,072 m — the world's highest railway point. The mountain range forms the border between Qinghai and Tibet, with glaciers and permafrost landscapes visible from the train.

Why start here

First-day shape

If arriving via Delingha, head first to Chaka Salt Lake (茶卡盐湖, about 2 hours east) — arrive early morning for the best mirror effect when winds are calm. The lake's shallow brine creates a perfect reflection of sky and clouds, earning it the nickname 'Mirror of the Sky.' Spend the morning walking the salt flats and riding the narrow-gauge mining railway across the lake. In the afternoon, drive to Delingha and visit the mysterious Baigong Pipes — iron pipe-like formations in a cave that have puzzled geologists. End with sunset over the Qaidam Basin from the outskirts of town.

What makes it tricky

Delingha Airport (HXD) has limited flights from Xining and a few other cities. Golmud is accessible by the Qinghai-Tibet Railway from Xining (6–7 hours) or Lhasa. By road from Xining to Delingha is about 4 hours; to Golmud about 8 hours. The prefecture is enormous — distances between attractions can be 300–500 km. No special permits required (Qinghai province). Altitude ranges from 2,700 m (Delingha) to 6,621 m (Geladandong). Extreme temperature swings and UV exposure year-round.

Transport note

A car is absolutely essential in Haixi — distances are enormous and public transport between attractions is nonexistent. Hire a driver in Delingha or Golmud for multi-day trips. The Qinghai-Tibet Railway connects Xining–Delingha–Golmud–Lhasa. Roads are generally good (G315, G109) but remote stretches have no services for hundreds of kilometers. Carry extra fuel, water, and food. Mobile signal is patchy outside cities. 4WD recommended for Yardang and off-road destinations.

Food note

Haixi cuisine is practical and hearty, reflecting its harsh environment. In Delingha and Golmud, Hui Muslim restaurants dominate — excellent hand-pulled noodles (拉面), lamb skewers, and yangrou paomo. Tibetan and Mongolian influences appear in yak meat dishes and dairy products. Golmud has more restaurant variety as a larger transit city. Bring supplies for road trips — there's nothing between towns. Local specialties include Qaidam goji berries (枸杞) and wild black goji (黑枸杞), both grown in the alkaline desert soil.
