City preview

Ziyang

Ziyang sits at the crossroads of ancient human history and living Buddhist art — it's where a 40,000-year-old human skull (Ziyang Man) was found, and where over 100,000 Tang and Song Dynasty stone carvings survive in Anyue County. Proximity to Chengdu Tianfu International Airport makes it an easy add-on to any Sichuan itinerary, yet it remains far off the tourist trail.

Mengxihe Paleolithic Site

猛犀河遗址

A Paleolithic site in Lezhi County dating back 50,000–70,000 years, declared one of China's six most important archaeological finds of 2023. Over 105,000 tools, animal fossils (bear, rhino, fish, bird), plant remains, and evidence of fire use have been unearthed. The site uniquely combines large and small stone tool traditions, challenging conventional models of Paleolithic China.

medium priority

Wofoyuan Sleeping Buddha Temple

卧佛院

Located in Wofo Village, Anyue County, this Tang Dynasty grotto complex stretches along a 1 km valley. The centerpiece is a 21.3-meter reclining Sakyamuni carved into the cliff face — one of the largest Tang-era sleeping Buddhas in China. The site contains 1,613 cliff statues, inscriptions, and scripture niches, and was a national key cultural relic protection unit since 1988.

Anyue Stone Carvings / Qianfozhai

安岳石刻 / 千佛寨

Why start here

Ziyang sits at the crossroads of ancient human history and living Buddhist art — it's where a 40,000-year-old human skull (Ziyang Man) was found, and where over 100,000 Tang and Song Dynasty stone carvings survive in Anyue County. Proximity to Chengdu Tianfu International Airport makes it an easy add-on to any Sichuan itinerary, yet it remains far off the tourist trail.

First-day shape

Arrive from Chengdu via highway (1–1.5 hrs). Head to Anyue County to visit Wofoyuan Sleeping Buddha Courtyard Temple — the 21.3-meter Tang Dynasty reclining Sakyamuni is the centerpiece. Spend the afternoon at Qianfozhai (Thousand Buddha Village) on Dayun Mountain, with 105 grottoes and 3,064 statues. In the evening, return to Yanjiang District (the urban core) for dinner and overnight.

What makes it tricky

Ziyang is approximately 60–80 km east of Chengdu and is accessible via China National Highways 321 and 351. The nearest major airport is Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU), which is within the Ziyang economic zone. Domestic travelers can reach Ziyang by highway bus or private car from Chengdu in about 1–1.5 hours. Foreign visitors need a standard Chinese tourist visa (L visa); Alipay and WeChat Pay are the dominant payment methods — carry some cash as backup in rural areas.

Transport note

Ziyang is served by China National Highways 321 and 351. The city is approximately 60–80 km from central Chengdu and 1–1.5 hours by car or highway bus. Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) is located within the Ziyang economic development zone, making air access straightforward. Within the prefecture, county-level destinations like Anyue (安岳) require an additional 1–1.5 hour drive from Yanjiang District. No high-speed rail directly serves Ziyang city center as of the latest available data.

Food note

Ziyang sits in the Sichuan Basin and shares the broader Sichuan culinary tradition — expect numbing-spicy (麻辣) flavors, hotpot, and river fish dishes given the Tuo River running through the region. Anyue County is known for locally grown lemons (安岳柠檬) — Anyue is China's largest lemon-producing county, and lemon-flavored snacks and drinks are a local specialty worth trying.
