Morning: visit Xiaocao Lake (小草海) — a highland wetland and bird sanctuary on the edge of the city, particularly beautiful in autumn when migratory birds arrive. Midday: explore the Zhaotong city center and the Zhaotong Museum for local history and Zhu culture artifacts. Afternoon: drive to the Dousha Gorge (豆沙关) — an ancient Silk Road pass through dramatic cliffs with inscriptions dating back to the Han dynasty. Evening: try local Zhaotong specialties at a restaurant in the city center.
Zhaotong Airport has flights to Kunming (~1h) and other Yunnan cities. High-speed rail from Kunming ~3-4h (via Yibin). Bus connections to Kunming, Chengdu, and Guiyang. Chinese payment apps required. English very limited. Mountain roads can be slow — allow extra travel time. Best visited April-October; winter can bring ice and road closures.

Zhaotong Airport is south of the city (taxi ~¥30-40). City buses and taxis available. Dousha Gorge is ~100km from the city center (1.5-2h by car). Wumeng Mountain scenic areas require chartered vehicles. High-speed rail station is outside the city center — taxi or bus required.
Zhaotong cuisine blends Yunnan, Sichuan, and Guizhou influences: spicy noodles (Zhaotong noodles are famous in Yunnan), smoked pork, buckwheat products, and wild mushrooms. Local specialties include Zhaotong apple (昭通苹果) — among the best in China — and Zhaotong honey. Budget ¥25-60/person at local restaurants. Sichuan-style hotpot is widely available.
