Why start here

Zhangjiakou sits at the crossroads of northern China and Inner Mongolia, just 180 km from Beijing and reachable in under an hour by high-speed rail. It earned global attention as a co-host of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, and its Chongli District now ranks among China's premier ski destinations. Beyond winter sports, the city offers sweeping grasslands, ancient Great Wall passes, and a refreshing summer climate that draws road-trippers escaping the capital heat.

First-day shape

Arrive at Zhangjiakou Railway Station by high-speed train from Beijing. Head to Dajing Gate (大境门) in the morning — the Great Wall pass that defined the city's history as a Han-Mongolian trade hub. Grab lunch in the city center and try Youmian Wowo (oat-flour rolls) or a bowl of Pot-stewed Lamb soup. In the afternoon, visit the Zhangjiakou Museum for a deeper look at the city's military and cultural heritage. If you're based in Chongli for skiing, transfer to Taizicheng Station and check in at one of the resort hotels near Genting Snow Park.

What makes it tricky

Getting here is easy from Beijing: the dedicated high-speed rail line from Beijing North Station reaches Zhangjiakou Railway Station in just 47 minutes (approx. ¥80). Taizicheng Station in Chongli District is the stop closest to the ski resorts, with free shuttle buses to all major resorts. Drivers can use the Jingzhang or Xuanda expressways. Zhangjiakou Ningyuan Airport (ZQZ) serves a handful of domestic routes including Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Xiamen, but the train is the dominant and most convenient option.

Transport note

High-speed rail from Beijing North Station to Zhangjiakou takes just 47 minutes (¥80). Taizicheng Station in Chongli is the ski-resort hub with free resort shuttles. Within the city, buses and taxis (starting at ¥5 for 2 km) cover the main areas; Didi ride-hailing works here. For Chongli ski resorts, long-distance buses run from Zhangjiakou Station and Zhangjiakou South Station to Yunding, Taiwu, and Wanlong. Self-drivers should allow extra time in winter as mountain roads freeze easily; summer is ideal for the Grassland Sky Road drive.

Food note

Zhangjiakou's cuisine reflects its northern frontier heritage. The signature dish is Youmian Wowo (莜面窝窝) — hand-rolled oat-flour cones, steamed and served with dipping sauces or minced meat; the nutty, chewy texture is distinctly local. Roast Lamb (烤全羊) seasoned with cumin and chili is a celebration staple. In winter, Pot-stewed Lamb soup (羊杂汤) — a hearty broth of lamb offal, ginger, and spices — is the go-to warming meal. Expect honest, filling northern Chinese cooking rather than refined cuisine.
