台儿庄古城

A reconstructed canal-era water city in Taierzhuang District, built around the historic Grand Canal wharf district that was the site of the 1938 Battle of Taierzhuang — a major Chinese victory against Japanese forces. The scenic area includes ancient rivers, wharfs, the Taierzhuang War Memorial Hall, a cross-strait exchange base, and an elaborate nightly entertainment program featuring light shows, projection mapping, fire dragon and steel performances, and shadow puppet shows running from 16:30 to 22:00.

Weishan Lake Wetland Red Lotus Scenic Area

微山湖风景区

Located near Binhu Town in Tengzhou City, Weishan Lake is described as the largest lotus-viewing destination in East China with the best-preserved wetland landscape of its kind in China, earning it the title 'Lotus Capital of China.' The scenic area covers 90 square kilometers (60 sq km of lake surface) and includes Panlong Island, Xiaoli Village, an Aquatic Botanical Garden, a Wetland Drifting Garden, a Lotus Boutique Garden, and a Wetland Museum. White sails, red lotus, green reeds, and gulls define the visual character of the lake year-round.

Xiong'er Mountain Great Rift Valley

熊耳山大裂谷

Located in Beizhuang Town, Shanting District, this geological scenic area centers on Xiong'er Mountain and features dramatic natural formations including Chu Valley, Shuanglong Rift Valley, Crouching Tiger Cave, Longzhu Cliff, and collapse geological disaster relics. Guanshi Liuyuan Scenic Area

冠世榴园景区

Why start here

Zaozhuang sits at the southern edge of Shandong, straddling the ancient Grand Canal corridor and the site of one of WWII's most significant Chinese military victories. It offers a rare combination of living canal-town heritage at Taierzhuang, dramatic rift-valley geology, vast lotus wetlands, and a pomegranate orchard belt — all within easy reach of a high-speed rail station, making it a compact but surprisingly layered destination.

First-day shape

Arrive at Zaozhuang High-Speed Rail Station and take the T1 BRT to the city center. Check in, then head to Taierzhuang Ancient City in the afternoon — arrive before 16:30 to catch the transition into the evening light show, projection mapping, fire dragon and steel performances, and shadow puppet shows that run until 22:00. The ancient rivers, wharfs, and water-city layout are best experienced on foot after dark when the lanterns are lit. Return to the city center for a late dinner of Zaozhuang Spicy Chicken (枣庄辣子鸡) paired with local pastries.

What makes it tricky

Zaozhuang has a high-speed rail station (Zaozhuang Station) on the Beijing–Shanghai HSR line, making it straightforward to reach from Beijing (~2.5 hrs), Shanghai (~2 hrs), or Jinan (~1 hr). Within the city, a BRT line (T1) connects the high-speed rail station to the urban core. Taierzhuang Ancient City is about 50 km east of the main urban area and requires a separate bus or taxi leg. English signage is limited outside major tourist sites.

Transport note

Zaozhuang Station on the Beijing–Shanghai High-Speed Railway is the main arrival point. The T1 BRT line connects the station to the urban core (Shizhong District). Within the city, local buses and ride-hailing (Didi) cover most districts. Taierzhuang Ancient City is approximately 50 km east of the city center — take the T1 BRT to the Unicom Transfer Center Bus Station, then transfer to bus No. 25. For Weishan Lake and Lianqingshan in Tengzhou City, buses from Tengzhou Bus Station or ride-hailing are the practical options. Tengzhou City is itself accessible by local train or bus from Zaozhuang.

Food note

Zaozhuang Spicy Chicken (枣庄辣子鸡) is the city's signature dish — a wok-fried preparation with dried chilies, typically cooked with potato chips that absorb the sauce for a dry, crispy texture, served alongside local pastries. Shanting Mutton Soup (山亭羊肉汤) is a time-honored breakfast and brunch staple, available from 05:00 to 14:00, with cold mutton sides. Tengzhou Vegetable Pancakes (滕州菜煎饼) are a street-food staple — crispy pancakes filled with vegetables, egg, and ham, available for around ¥10. In Taierzhuang District, Huanghua Beef Noodles (台儿庄黄花牛肉面) feature hand-pulled noodles in a broth with beef and day lily, priced around ¥15. For drinks, Ashui Big Cup Tea (阿水大杯茶) is a local Shandong chain with outlets on nearly every street in Zaozhuang, open until 02:00.
