City preview

Yanbian

Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture is China's only Korean autonomous prefecture, home to over 2 million ethnic Koreans who have preserved a living Korean culture — language, food, customs — within China's borders. It sits at the intersection of three countries (China, North Korea, Russia) and serves as the gateway to Changbai Mountain's legendary Heavenly Lake. The blend of Korean heritage and dramatic northeastern landscapes makes it unlike anywhere else in China.

Why start here

Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture is China's only Korean autonomous prefecture, home to over 2 million ethnic Koreans who have preserved a living Korean culture — language, food, customs — within China's borders. It sits at the intersection of three countries (China, North Korea, Russia) and serves as the gateway to Changbai Mountain's legendary Heavenly Lake. The blend of Korean heritage and dramatic northeastern landscapes makes it unlike anywhere else in China.

First-day shape

Morning: Arrive in Yanji and check in near the city center. Head to the Yanbian Museum to get grounded in the Korean ethnic minority history and culture of the region. Afternoon: Visit the Korean Folk-custom Garden near Yanji for a hands-on look at traditional Korean architecture, dress, and customs. Grab lunch at a local Korean restaurant — try cold noodles (naengmyeon) and Korean BBQ, which are regional staples. Evening: Walk the city streets of Yanji, where Korean-language signs and Korean-style eateries line the blocks. The city has a distinctly cross-cultural feel unlike any other Chinese city. If arriving in winter, check ski conditions at Mengdumei Ski Resort for a next-day activity.

What makes it tricky

Yanji Chaoyangchuan International Airport (YNJ) connects to major Chinese cities; no direct international routes. High-speed rail (G/D trains) links Yanji to Changchun and Shenyang. Payment: WeChat Pay and Alipay are standard; cash (CNY) works everywhere. Language: Korean and Mandarin are both official — signage is bilingual. English is rare; print destination names in Chinese/Korean characters. Taxi drivers and locals generally do not speak English; younger residents are more likely to help.

Transport note

Yanji is the hub. City buses cover major attractions and are punctual; shared bicycles available for short hops. Didi (ride-hailing) works well — use the English version via Alipay or WeChat. Inter-city buses from four main stations in Yanji: Public Railway Separation Station, Northeast Asia Passenger Terminal, North Passenger Station, and West City Passenger Terminal. Key routes: Yanji→Erdaobaihe (Changbai Mountain base) 5 daily buses, ~¥33, departs 06:30–14:30; Yanji→Tumen ~1.5h, ¥6.5; Yanji→Hunchun ~2h, ¥16; Yanji→Wangqing ~2h, ¥9. Airport buses 18, 28, 44 connect to city center. Print destination names in Chinese/Korean — drivers rarely speak English.

Food note

Yanbian is the best place in China to eat authentic Korean food outside of Korea. Staples include Yanbian cold noodles (延边冷面, a regional variation of naengmyeon), Korean BBQ (고기구이), rice cakes (tteok), kimchi in many forms, and dog meat dishes (a traditional food in Korean culture, though controversial). Korean-style fried chicken and street snacks are widely available in Yanji. The food scene is genuinely distinct from Han Chinese cuisine — expect fermented, spicy, and cold preparations. Many restaurants have Korean-language menus; pointing or using a translation app works fine.
