Xing'an League

Xing'an League (Hinggan League, 兴安盟) sits in the eastern tip of Inner Mongolia, where the Greater Khingan Mountains meet the Songnen Plain. It is one of China's least-touristed frontier regions — a place of sweeping grasslands, volcanic crater lakes, dense boreal forests, and living Mongolian and Daur nomadic culture. Ulanhot, the league capital, is also the birthplace of Inner Mongolia's autonomous government, giving the region both natural grandeur and modern historical significance.

Top attractions

Marketplace attraction names can be duplicated or packaged as tours. Use this as a shortlist lead, then verify tickets, hours, and access rules from official sources.

medium priority

Arxan National Forest Park

阿尔山国家森林公园

A UNESCO-listed geopark in the southern Greater Khingan Mountains, Arxan protects a dramatic volcanic landscape of crater lakes, lava fields, hot springs, and boreal taiga forest. The park's centerpiece is a chain of volcanic lakes — Tianchi (天池), Yue Liang Tian Chi (月亮天池), and Julong Lake — set among ancient lava flows. In autumn the birch and larch forests turn gold and crimson, making it one of Inner Mongolia's most photogenic destinations.

medium priority

Horqin Grassland

科尔沁草原 — Xing'an section

The eastern fringe of the Horqin steppe stretches across southern Xing'an League, offering classic Inner Mongolian grassland scenery: rolling hills, wildflower meadows, and herds of horses and cattle. Several Mongolian herder families near Ulanhot and Zhalaite Banner offer yurt homestays, horseback riding, and traditional naadam-style games. The grassland is at its greenest from late June through August.

medium priority

Genghis Khan Temple, Ulanhot

成吉思汗庙

Perched on a hill overlooking Ulanhot, this Mongolian-style temple was built in 1940 to honor Genghis Khan and is one of the few such temples in eastern Inner Mongolia. The complex features traditional Mongolian architectural motifs, murals depicting Mongol history, and sweeping views of the city and surrounding steppe. It remains an active site of Mongolian cultural veneration.

medium priority

Arxan Hot Springs

阿尔山温泉

Arxan town sits atop one of China's most geologically active hot-spring fields, with over 40 named springs ranging from cold mineral springs to 45°C thermal pools. The springs are rich in radon, sulfur, and bicarbonate minerals and have been used for therapeutic bathing since the Qing dynasty. Several resort hotels in Arxan offer private and public spring pools.

medium priority

Zhalaite Banner Wetlands

扎赉特旗湿地

The Nenjiang River floodplain in Zhalaite Banner supports extensive reed marshes and shallow lakes that serve as critical stopover habitat for migratory cranes, storks, and waterfowl on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) migrations bring thousands of white-naped cranes, hooded cranes, and Oriental white storks through the area.

Why start here

Xing'an League (Hinggan League, 兴安盟) sits in the eastern tip of Inner Mongolia, where the Greater Khingan Mountains meet the Songnen Plain. It is one of China's least-touristed frontier regions — a place of sweeping grasslands, volcanic crater lakes, dense boreal forests, and living Mongolian and Daur nomadic culture. Ulanhot, the league capital, is also the birthplace of Inner Mongolia's autonomous government, giving the region both natural grandeur and modern historical significance.

First-day shape

Arrive in Ulanhot and visit the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Government Memorial Hall (成吉思汗庙 area) to understand the region's founding history. In the afternoon, drive or take a taxi to the Ulanhot Genghis Khan Temple (成吉思汗庙), a striking hilltop Mongolian-style temple complex with panoramic views over the city. In the evening, try hand-pulled lamb (手把肉) and milk tea at a local Mongolian restaurant near the central market.

What makes it tricky

Moderate. Ulanhot (乌兰浩特) has a domestic airport (HLH) with flights to Beijing, Hohhot, and Shenyang. High-speed rail connects Ulanhot to Baicheng and Tongliao, with onward connections to Changchun and Shenyang. Arxan, the main scenic hub, is reached by a separate rail line or a 3–4 hour drive from Ulanhot. Car rental or hiring a local driver is strongly recommended for reaching grassland and forest sites, as public transport between scenic areas is sparse.

Transport note

Ulanhot Airport (HLH) has daily flights to Beijing Capital and seasonal routes to Hohhot and Shenyang. The Baicheng–Ulanhot high-speed rail line connects to the national network at Baicheng (for Changchun/Harbin) and Tongliao (for Beijing via Shenyang). Within the league, intercity buses connect Ulanhot to Arxan (approx. 3.5 hours), Zhalaite Banner, and Tuquan. Taxis and ride-hailing (DiDi) are available in Ulanhot. For grassland and forest sites, hiring a local driver for the day (¥300–500) is the most practical option. Roads to Arxan are well-paved; some grassland tracks require a high-clearance vehicle.

Food note

Xing'an League cuisine is dominated by Mongolian pastoral traditions. Must-try dishes include hand-pulled lamb (手把肉, shou ba rou) — boiled mutton eaten with fingers and salt — and roasted whole lamb (烤全羊) at celebratory meals. Milk tea (奶茶, nai cha) made with brick tea and fresh cow or mare's milk is served at every meal. Fried millet cakes (炒米) and dried curd (奶豆腐) are common snacks. In Ulanhot, the night market near the central bus station offers affordable lamb skewers, offal hot pot, and local dairy products. Arxan town has a handful of restaurants serving forest mushroom dishes alongside standard Mongolian fare.
