Why start here

Xiahe is home to Labrang Monastery, one of the six great monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism's Gelug school and the most important Tibetan Buddhist site outside the Tibet Autonomous Region. Sitting at 2,900m on the Tibetan Plateau edge, it offers an immersive Tibetan cultural experience that is far more accessible than Lhasa. The surrounding grasslands and nomadic communities make it a natural base for exploring the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.

First-day shape

Start with the morning kora (circumambulation) around Labrang Monastery's 3km prayer wheel corridor — join pilgrims spinning thousands of prayer wheels at dawn. After breakfast at a Tibetan teahouse, take a guided tour of the monastery's assembly halls and debating courtyard. Afternoon walk to the Sangke Grasslands (8km away) to see nomadic yak herders. Return for a dinner of tsampa, yak butter tea, and momos at a local Tibetan restaurant.

What makes it tricky

Accessible by bus from Lanzhou (approx. 4 hours) or Hezuo. No direct rail; nearest station is Linxia or Lanzhou. Altitude (2,900m) may cause mild altitude sickness for some visitors. Chinese payment apps required; some guesthouses accept cash only. Limited English but Tibetan-speaking guides widely available.

Transport note

Xiahe town is compact and walkable. Minibuses run to Hezuo and Linxia. Taxis and motorcycle taxis available for local trips. Renting a bicycle is popular for reaching Sangke Grasslands. No city bus system.

Food note

Tibetan cuisine dominates: tsampa (roasted barley flour), yak butter tea, momos (dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), and yak meat dishes. Hui Muslim restaurants offer excellent hand-pulled noodles and lamb. Budget 40-80 CNY per person. The main street has several traveler-friendly cafes with English menus.
