Tengchong Volcanic Geothermal National Geological Park

A large national park protecting the geologically significant Tengchong Volcanic Field, divided into several scenic areas. The two main areas are the Rehai (Hot Sea) Scenic Area with its boiling geothermal pools and geysers, and the Volcano Scenic Area with climbable volcanic cones. The two areas are about 37 km apart but can be visited in one day.

An underground river forced to the surface by ancient lava flows, named after the black fish that inhabit it. Features fine examples of columnar basalt jointing. Free admission and the least-visited of the park's scenic areas.

Transport note

Tengchong Tuofeng Airport (about 10 km south of city center) has frequent flights from Kunming and connections to Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, and other major cities. Long-distance buses run from Tengchong's main bus station on Rehai Road to Kunming, Baoshan, Dali, and Lijiang. Taxis and Didi are the best way to get around the city and to outlying scenic areas.

Food note

Tengchong's food reflects its border location and diverse ethnic mix. Specialties include Tengchong hot pot with locally sourced ingredients, pineapple rice (a Dai minority dish), chili chicken with local herbs, and pork with pickled vegetables. The city also has strong Burmese food influences from its long trading history with Myanmar.
