medium priority

Wanfenglin Scenic Area

万峰林

A national AAAAA-level scenic area covering over 2,000 sq km in the southeastern suburbs of Xingyi. Recognized as the world's most typical cone karst peak forest, it was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in March 2024. The area is divided into East and West Peak Forests, with highlights including the Eight-Trigram Field, Stars Surrounding the Moon viewpoint, and Buyi ethnic villages. Ming Dynasty traveler Xu Xiake wrote: 'There are so many peaks in the world, but only here do they form a forest.'

medium priority

Maling River Canyon

马岭河峡谷

A 2.5-km-long canyon with depths of 120–280 meters, carved by the Maling River through limestone. Known as the 'most beautiful scar on Earth,' it features over 100 waterfalls cascading from the canyon walls, calcite formations, caves, and a rushing river. Accessible by hiking trail or boat, with rafting available during the wet season (May–August).

medium priority

Wanfeng Lake

万峰湖

A large reservoir covering approximately 816 sq km, surrounded by thousands of karst peaks — hence the name 'Ten Thousand Peaks Lake.' Located near both Wanfenglin and Maling River Canyon, it is one of the five largest freshwater lakes in China. The lake offers boat tours, fishing, and views of peak forests, stone formations, and caves along its shoreline.

Why start here

Qianxinan (黔西南) is home to Wanfenglin — a UNESCO Global Geopark and China's most iconic cone karst peak forest, spanning over 2,000 sq km. The prefecture capital Xingyi sits at the junction of Guizhou, Yunnan, and Guangxi, making it a natural gateway into southwest China's ethnic heartland. It combines dramatic natural scenery with living Buyi and Miao culture that remains largely off the mainstream tourist circuit.

First-day shape

Arrive at Xingyi, check into a guesthouse in or near Wanfenglin Scenic Area. Spend the afternoon exploring the East Peak Forest on foot or by mini scenic train, passing the Eight-Trigram Field and General Peak viewpoints. In the evening, try local Buyi cuisine at a guesthouse restaurant — rice paddy fish (稻田鱼) is the signature dish. Stay overnight in the scenic area to catch sunrise over the karst peaks and rice fields the next morning.

What makes it tricky

Fly into Xingyi Wanfenglin Airport (ACX), which has direct connections to major Chinese cities including Guiyang, Chengdu, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. High-speed rail is not yet the primary option — most visitors arrive by air or long-distance bus from Guiyang (approx. 4–5 hours). Foreign visitors to mainland China require a valid visa (most nationalities); mobile payment via WeChat Pay or Alipay is dominant, so setting up a linked Chinese bank card or international card binding in advance is strongly recommended.

Transport note

Primary entry is via Xingyi Wanfenglin Airport (ACX) with flights to Guiyang, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and other major cities. Long-distance buses connect Xingyi to Guiyang (4–5 hours) and Kunming. Within the scenic areas, mini scenic trains, cable cars, and bike rentals are available at Wanfenglin. Taxis and ride-hailing (DiDi) operate in Xingyi city. Renting a car or hiring a private driver is recommended for flexible access between Wanfenglin, Maling River Canyon, and Wanfeng Lake.

Food note

Qianxinan cuisine is rooted in Buyi and Miao traditions. The signature local dish is rice paddy fish (稻田鱼) — small fish raised in the flooded rice paddies of Wanfenglin, typically grilled or stir-fried. Sour soups (酸汤), glutinous rice dishes, and smoked meats are staples. Buyi-style tofu and wild mountain vegetables are common. Guesthouses in Wanfenglin Scenic Area typically serve home-cooked ethnic meals; the city of Xingyi has a broader range of restaurants including Guizhou-style hot pot.
