Panjin

Panjin is home to one of China's most visually striking natural phenomena — the Red Beach, where vast wetlands turn a vivid crimson each autumn thanks to a unique seaweed called Suaeda salsa. Sitting at the mouth of the Liaohe River, the city is also a critical habitat for rare migratory birds including red-crowned cranes, making it a must for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. Beyond the scenery, Panjin's famous rice paddies and river crabs give it a strong culinary identity that sets it apart from other Liaoning cities.

Why start here

Panjin is home to one of China's most visually striking natural phenomena — the Red Beach, where vast wetlands turn a vivid crimson each autumn thanks to a unique seaweed called Suaeda salsa. Sitting at the mouth of the Liaohe River, the city is also a critical habitat for rare migratory birds including red-crowned cranes, making it a must for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. Beyond the scenery, Panjin's famous rice paddies and river crabs give it a strong culinary identity that sets it apart from other Liaoning cities.

First-day shape

Morning: Arrive at Panjin Railway Station and check in to a city-center hotel. Take bus No. 1, 5, 7, or 10 to Zhong Xing Park for a gentle orientation walk. Late morning: Head to the Liaohe River Forest of Steles (辽河碑林) for a dose of local culture and calligraphy history. Lunch: Eat at a local restaurant near the train station area — order Panjin river crab (螃蟹) and a bowl of Panjin rice (盘锦大米), the city's two signature foods. Afternoon: Take a minibus from Liaohe Youtian Sport Center (辽河油田体育馆, No. 110 Xinglongtai St) toward Red Beach Resort — buses depart at 07:00, 11:00, 15:00, and 17:10. Spend the afternoon exploring the Red Beach Scenic Area (红海滩风景区), walking the boardwalks over the crimson wetlands and watching for migratory birds. Return bus from Red Beach Resort departs at 06:00, 08:00, 13:00, or 16:00 (¥7, ~1 hour). Evening: Dinner back in the city — try more local seafood and crab dishes.

What makes it tricky

Panjin is well connected by rail — high-speed G trains from Shenyang take about 1h15m; slower K trains around 2h30m. Note that Panjin North Railway Station is far from the city center (add ~1 hour), so aim for Panjin Railway Station (盘锦站) instead. No direct international airport; nearest options are Shenyang Taoxian (~120 km), Jinzhou Xiaolingzi (~100 km), or Dalian Zhoushuizi (~260 km). Three long-distance bus stations serve most northeastern cities. Cash and WeChat/Alipay are standard; English signage is limited outside major tourist sites — basic Mandarin or a translation app is helpful.

Transport note

Within the city, public buses and taxis are the main options — sights are spread out and not walkable between. Bus lines 1, 5, 7, and 10 connect the train station to central parks. For Red Beach, take the dedicated minibus from Liaohe Youtian Sport Center (¥7, ~1 hour each way); return buses have limited departure times so plan carefully. Taxis and tuk-tuks are available at the Red Beach Resort for the final stretch to the beach itself. Bargaining is expected for informal transport near tourist sites.

Food note

Panjin is celebrated across Liaoning for two products: its short-grain rice (盘锦大米), grown in the mineral-rich wetland paddies, and its river crabs (河蟹), harvested from the Liaohe River delta. Both are considered premium products and are widely exported. Locals also eat freshwater clams and other shellfish from the coastal flats. At bus and train stations, you'll see travelers carrying bags of Panjin rice home as gifts — a reliable sign of local pride. Crab season peaks in autumn (September–November), coinciding with the Red Beach's most vivid color.
