Maoxian is on China National Highway 213, the main road from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou. Buses from Chengdu's Chadianzi Bus Station run regularly (about 3–4 hours, ¥50–70). The county is also accessible from Wenchuan (south) and Songpan (north). Local minibuses connect the county seat of Fengyi to outlying villages.
Qiang cuisine features cured meats, wild mountain vegetables, corn-based dishes, and locally brewed millet wine (咂酒). Roasted corn and potato dishes are staples. Local restaurants in Fengyi Town serve hearty Qiang meals for ¥20–40. The county is also known for its walnuts and dried fruits.
