Why start here

Huainan is the legendary birthplace of tofu (豆腐) — Han dynasty prince Liu An is credited with its invention here over 2,000 years ago, making it a pilgrimage site for food history enthusiasts. The city sits in north-central Anhui along the Huai River, blending industrial heritage with ancient cultural relics, including the historic walled city of Shou County (a UNESCO World Heritage candidate). It offers an authentic, off-the-beaten-path window into Anhui's heartland without the tourist crowds of Huangshan or Hefei.

First-day shape

Morning: Arrive at Huainan East Station and check into a hotel near Longhu Park. Head to the Huainan Tofu Cultural Park (淮南豆腐文化园) to learn about Liu An's 2,000-year-old invention — taste freshly made tofu in its many forms. Midday: Lunch at a local restaurant specializing in Huainan tofu banquet (豆腐宴), a multi-course meal showcasing tofu prepared dozens of ways. Afternoon: Visit the Baguo Mountain Scenic Area (八公山风景区), the very site where Liu An is said to have discovered tofu while pursuing Taoist alchemy. The mountain also features ancient temples and Han dynasty cultural sites. Evening: Stroll along Longhu Park (龙湖公园) lakeside, then explore the nearby night market for local snacks including tofu pudding (豆腐脑) and Huai River fish dishes.

What makes it tricky

Huainan is well-connected by rail: Huainan Station handles conventional trains, while Huainan East Station and Huainan South Station serve high-speed rail on the Hefei–Fuyang corridor. Hefei (the provincial capital) is about 1 hour away by high-speed train. No international airport — fly into Hefei Xinqiao International Airport and transfer by train or bus (~1.5 hrs). Mandarin is essential; English signage is minimal outside major hotels. Mobile payment (Alipay/WeChat Pay) is dominant; carry some cash as backup. UnionPay cards are widely accepted at hotels.

Transport note

Within the city, public buses and taxis are the main options. Didi (China's Uber equivalent) works well and is the easiest option for non-Mandarin speakers — use the app with a Chinese phone number or have a local help book rides. The city is spread across multiple districts; getting between Tianjia'an District (city center) and Shou County requires about 1 hour by bus or 40 minutes by taxi/Didi. Baguo Mountain is accessible by taxi from the city center in about 20–30 minutes. No metro system. Bike-sharing (Meituan/Hello bikes) is available in central areas.

Food note

Huainan's defining culinary identity is tofu. The city hosts an annual Tofu Culture Festival and is famous for its 'tofu banquet' (豆腐宴) — a multi-course meal where every dish features tofu prepared in a different style: silken, fried, fermented, stuffed, braised, and more. Local specialties include: tofu pudding (豆腐脑) served savory with broth; stinky tofu (臭豆腐) Huainan-style; Huai River fish dishes (淮河鱼); and various Anhui-style braised meats. The city's position on the Huai River means freshwater fish and crayfish are seasonal staples. Look for local restaurants near Longhu Park and the old market areas for the most authentic experience.
