Huaibei

Huaibei sits at the crossroads of ancient canal civilization and modern coal-industry heritage in northern Anhui. The city's Sui-Tang Grand Canal corridor, Han Dynasty stone-relief tombs, and the Huaihai Campaign battlefield make it a compact but layered destination for travelers interested in Chinese history beyond the usual tourist circuit. It's also a practical base for day trips to Xuzhou, Bengbu, and Bozhou.

Why start here

Huaibei sits at the crossroads of ancient canal civilization and modern coal-industry heritage in northern Anhui. The city's Sui-Tang Grand Canal corridor, Han Dynasty stone-relief tombs, and the Huaihai Campaign battlefield make it a compact but layered destination for travelers interested in Chinese history beyond the usual tourist circuit. It's also a practical base for day trips to Xuzhou, Bengbu, and Bozhou.

First-day shape

Start at Huaibei City Museum (free entry, Tue–Sun 08:30–11:30 and 14:30–17:30) to ground yourself in the Grand Canal heritage and Han Dynasty stone-relief culture — budget 1.5 hours. Walk or taxi to the Sui-Tang Grand Canal Ancient Town near Nanli Road for lunch and a stroll through the reconstructed canal-era streetscape. In the afternoon, head to Xiangshan Park for a relaxed walk, then end the day at Nanhu National Urban Wetland Park for sunset over the reed beds.

What makes it tricky

Huaibei has two rail options: Huaibei Railway Station (regular trains, central location, ~10 min to most hotels) and Huaibei North Station (high-speed rail, ~20 min from city center by taxi). No direct international flights; most visitors connect via Xuzhou or Hefei. City buses cover major sights but routes can be complex — taxi and ride-hailing apps (DiDi) are the easiest way to get around.

Transport note

Within the city, buses cover major districts (routes 733, 833, 714, 360, 318, 904, 331 serve Xiangshan Park area; routes 8, 10, 12, 16 reach the museum). Taxis and DiDi are more practical for cross-district trips. Huaibei Railway Station is the main hub for regular trains; Huaibei North Station (high-speed) is ~20 min from the center. Onward connections: Xuzhou by high-speed rail ~1–1.5 hours (northeast); Bengbu by high-speed rail ~1–1.5 hours (south); Bozhou by long-distance bus ~1–1.5 hours (west).

Food note

Huaibei's food scene is rooted in northern Anhui traditions. Key items to try: Wang Hanzi Oil Tea (a warming street snack of oil-based tea with vinegar, soy sauce, and sesame oil, sold from large insulated pots); Ding Family Zhuangmo (a golden, crispy flatbread ~35 cm across with a chewy interior, over 200 years of history); Linhuan sesame seed cake (a year-round baked snack with a legendary origin story); Suixi pickled melon (crisp pickled cucumbers from Anhui Yuanchangzhai Sauce Factory, made since the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty); and Dazhuang grapes (cultivated for over 300 years in Duanyuan Town). The signature local drink is Kouzi Liquor — a strong-aroma baijiu with over a thousand years of brewing history, described as 'intoxicating to a thousand neighbors, its fragrance travels ten miles when opened.'
