Arrive by train or bus from Harbin or Jiamusi. Check into a local guesthouse or budget hotel — rates are among the lowest in China. Start with a walk through the Xiangyang District city center to get a feel for the scale of the place: wide Soviet-influenced boulevards, aging coal-era architecture, and a noticeably quiet pace. Visit the Hegang Coal Mine History Museum (鹤岗煤矿历史博物馆) in the afternoon to understand the city's founding identity. In the evening, head to a local dongbei restaurant for hearty northeastern staples — braised pork, pickled cabbage hotpot, and corn bread. The low prices will be immediately apparent.
Hegang is accessible by rail and road from Harbin (under 4 hours by car) and Jiamusi. The city has a small airport (Hegang Airport, HEK) with limited domestic connections, mainly to Harbin and Beijing. No high-speed rail currently serves the city directly. Mandarin is essential — English is virtually nonexistent. UnionPay and WeChat Pay / Alipay are the dominant payment methods; cash is still widely accepted. Foreign cards are largely unusable outside major hotels.

Within the city, taxis and ride-hailing (DiDi) are cheap and plentiful. City buses cover the main districts. The Yichun-Hegang Highway, Jiamusi-Hegang Highway, and Hegang-Luobei Highway form the main road network. Intercity travel to Harbin takes under 4 hours by car or bus. The railway connects to Jiamusi, from which onward connections to Harbin and the national network are available. Hegang Airport (HEK) has limited scheduled flights.
Hegang's food scene is quintessential dongbei (东北菜) — generous portions, hearty flavors, and extremely low prices. Must-tries include: 锅包肉 (guō bāo ròu, sweet-and-sour crispy pork), 酸菜白肉火锅 (pickled cabbage and pork hotpot), 小鸡炖蘑菇 (chicken and mushroom stew), and 玉米饼 (corn flatbread). Local rice from the Songhua River basin is high quality. Street food and local canteens are the best value — a full meal for two rarely exceeds 40–60 RMB.
