Why start here
Haidong is Qinghai Province's agricultural heartland and cultural crossroads, where the Tibetan Plateau meets the Loess Plateau along the upper Yellow River. As the closest major settlement to Xining with a distinct Tibetan, Hui, and Tu (Monguor) ethnic mix, it offers an accessible introduction to Qinghai's multi-ethnic tapestry. The city is home to the sacred Tibetan Buddhist monastery of Kumbum (Ta'er Si) in nearby Xining, but Haidong itself boasts the stunning Qilian Mountains, the ancient Tanggu Monastery, and the vibrant Tu ethnic culture with its unique festivals, embroidery, and architecture.
