City preview
Gejiu, known as China's 'Tin Capital' (锡都), is a city built on centuries of tin mining that shaped both its economy and its unique urban landscape. The city sits in a mountain basin with Jin Lake at its center, surrounded by rocky hills that once yielded the world's largest tin deposits. Its connection to the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway and the French colonial trade era gives it a distinctive industrial heritage unlike any other Yunnan destination.

Gejiu is accessible by bus from Kunming (4-6 hours, ¥80). Local buses run through the city for ¥1. The city is connected to Mengzi and Kaiyuan by road. The historic narrow-gauge railway is no longer in regular passenger service but parts of the route are preserved.
Gejiu's food reflects its diverse mining-town population. Local specialties include Honghe-style rice noodles, barbecued meats, and dishes influenced by the city's multi-ethnic workforce. The area around Jin Lake has the best concentration of local restaurants.
