Cangyuan is remote. Accessible by bus from Lincang city (approximately 5–6 hours) or from Gengma. Lincang has a domestic airport with flights to Kunming. Roads are mountainous and winding. No rail service. Best visited with advance planning and flexible scheduling.
Va cuisine is distinctive and unfamiliar to most Chinese travelers: grilled meats, bamboo-tube rice (竹筒饭), sour ant eggs, wild vegetables, and fermented preparations. The local markets in Mengdong offer exotic tropical fruits and Va specialty foods. Rice wine and corn liquor are traditional Va beverages.
