Batang is on the G318 Sichuan-Tibet Highway. Buses from Litang take 3–4 hrs; from Kangding 8–9 hrs. The Batang-Mangkang section of G318 is one of the most scenic on the entire route. A new railway line (Sichuan-Tibet Railway) is under construction and will eventually serve the area. No airport.
Batang's mild climate means fresh vegetables and fruit are more available than in higher towns. Local specialties include Batang pork (巴塘猪肉), fresh peaches and apricots in season, and Tibetan staples. Meals ¥25–60/person. The town has a good selection of small restaurants along the main street.
